Block Someone by Email Address in Gmail

In Gmail on the Web

Time needed: 3 minutes

To block an email address in Gmail so messages from that address go to the Spam label automatically using Gmail on the web:

  1. Open a message from the sender you want to block in Gmail using a desktop browser.

  2. Click the three dots More menu button () next to the sender’s name in the email header area.

This, not that: Make sure you do not accidentally click the same-shaped More menu button in the conversation’s toolbar (appearing together with buttons such as Delete and Label).
Expansion: If you do not see the More button next to the sender’s name in a conversation, click the name to expand the message.
Click the "More" menu button for the sender

  3. Select Block "Name" from the menu that has appeared.

Here’s when: Use blocking by email address for an easy way to filter out all emails from one particular sender, i.e., when you repeatedly receive unwanted messages from a single address.
Not for spam: For junk emails (where the sender email address is not significant, and you will likely never receive another junk email from the very same address), do mark the unwanted email as spam in Gmail instead.
    Select "Block <name>"

  4. Click Block under Block this email address.

Spilled milk: Gmail will not move existing messages that match the email address automatically; you can easily delete all existing emails from the sender in Gmail, of course.
Their word: Google include information on blocking senders in Gmail help.
