To turn any character into a superscript (smaller and raised above the baseline) with Microsoft Word for Windows, Word for Mac and Word online:

  1. Highlight the character you want to make a superscript.

  2. Go to the Home tab on the ribbon.

  3. Click Superscript in the Font section.

    Word online keyboard shortcut: In Word online, you can also press Ctrl Shift + (Windows, Linux) or Command Shift + (Mac) to render characters superscript.

Inputting Superscript Characters in Word for iPhone and Android

To make superscripted versions of characters in Word for iPhone and Android:

  1. Highlight the character or characters you want to make superscripts.
  2. Tap the three dots menu button in the formatting toolbar.
    Here’s where: You can find the button in the toolbar above the keyboard.
  3. Go to the Home section.
  4. Select More Formatting.
    Select “More Formatting” on the “Home” tab of the ribbon in Word for iOS
  5. Now select Superscript.

Yes.

To customize superscript characters in Word for Windows and Word for Mac:

  1. Select the characters you want to raise above the baseline.
  2. Go to the Home tab on the ribbon.
  3. Click the expansion button for Font.
    Word keyboard shortcut: You can also press Ctrl D (Windows) or Command D (Mac) to open the Font options dialog.
  4. Go to the Advanced tab.
  5. Select Raised for Position:
  6. Enter the amount by which you want to raise the characters.
    Example: Use 3 pt for superscripting for a 12 pt-typeface.
    Choose “Raised” and “By:” to superscribe a character by a custom amount in Word for Windows or Word for Mac
  7. Go to the Font tab.
  8. Choose a reduced size for the typeface under Size:.
    Example: Choose 8 for superscripts to a 12 pt-text.
  9. Click OK.
