Julienne is to thin little sticks what nanamegiri is to what we are about to do.

So, start with your carrot, spring onion, celery, or other vegetable at an angle to the cutting board. While you now gently rock the knife in your dominant hand, feed the vegetable to it using the guiding hand’s claw grip. Do this for a while, and you get a host of decorative, oval slices.

The fancy pieces’ technique needs a fancy name to go with it, of course: nanamegiri (the Japanese literally means “diagonal cut”).

Using the “Symbols” Dialog

Time needed: 1 minute

To use the angle symbol in Word for Windows:

  1. Position the text cursor where you want to insert the angle symbol.

  2. Go to the Insert tab on the ribbon.

  3. Select Symbol | More Symbols… in the Symbols section.

  4. Open the Symbols tab.

  5. Select a Unicode font (which includes the angle symbol) under Font.

    Example: A choice that always works is Lucida Sans Unicode.

  6. Now select Mathematical Operators under Subset:.

  7. Double-click the angle symbol you would like to insert.

    Your choice: Pick from angle (∠), measured angle (∡), spherical angle (∢) and, of course, right angle (∟).

Using Direct Unicode Input

To type (in a way) an angle symbol right inside your text with Word for Windows:

  1. Position the text insertion cursor where you want to insert the angle sign.
  2. Type the Uncide character code for the symbol from the table below.
    Example: Type 2221 for the measured angle.
  3. Press Alt X immediately after typing the code.

Insert the Angle Symbol in Word for Mac

On a Mac, do not bother with Word’s own means of inserting special characters and mathematical symbols. They offer meager help adding an angle symbol.

To insert angle signs in Word for Mac, use the operating system’s input dialog instead:

  1. Position the text cursor where you want to insert the angle symbol.
  2. Select Edit | Emoji & Symbols from the menu.
  3. Use the Search field to look for angle.
  4. Double-click the desired angle symbol to insert it.
