Link Text to a Website or File on the Web

Time needed: 2 minutes

To add a link to text in Apple Notes on Mac, iPhone and iPad:

  1. Prepare the destination URL for the link.

    Copy: Typically, copy the address to the clipboard in your browser or from a link collection.
    Example: To link to this article, highlight the URL in the browser’s address. bar, then press Command C (Mac) or select Copy from the context menu (iPhone).
    Typing: Of course, you need not paste the link; you can also type the address.

  2. Highlight the portion of text you want to link.

    Here’s how: Use the mouse to select text in Notes for Mac; on iPhone and iPad, double tap the word or section you want to highlight, then use the selection’s handles to adjust its size.
    No text yet: You can also insert a link and text at the same time — or insert a link on its own; see below.

  3. Open the context menu for the selected text.

    Here’s how: On a Mac, click on the text with the right mouse button. on iOS and iPadOS, tap the selection if the context menu is not already present.

  4. Select Add Link… from the context menu.

    Mac keyboard shortcut: Click Command K on a Mac to open the Add Link dialog.

  5. Paste or type the URI for the web page or document accessible via the internet under Link To:.

    Notes for Mac: Press Command V to paste.

  6. Enter or change the text if desired under Name:.

    No text: If the field is empty, Notes will insert the URL as text and link that to the destination.

  7. Click Done or OK.

To add a link to text using Notes in a browser at iCloud.com:

  1. Highlight the text you want to link.
  2. Press Command K (Mac) or Ctrl K (Linux and Windows).
    No menu: Linking text is only possible using the keyboard shortcut at iCloud.com
  3. Paste or type the destination URI under Link To:.
  4. Click Done.

Insert a Plain Link into a Note with Apple Notes

To insert just a URL as a link (which will let you click to open) in a note with Apple Notes using Mac, iPhone, iPad or iCloud.com:

  1. Position the text cursor where you want the link to appear.
  2. Paste or type the destination URL.
    Example: Type https://ladedu.com/how-to-add-a-website-link-to-a-note-in-apple-notes/ to link to this article.
  3. Press Space.
    Here’s what happens: Entering whitespace (or a line break) turns the URL into linked text with the URL itself as the destination.

Add a Link to a Note Using the “Share” Button

To quickly save a link to a page on the web from a browser (such as Safari) to a note in Apple Notes on Mac, iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the page you want to save in the browser.
  2. Click the Share button.
    No Share button: On a Mac, you can also select File | Share… from the menu; on iPhone and iPad, you will often finde a Share… item in the page’s context or three dots menu.
  3. Select Notes from the sharing menu.
  4. Pick an existing note under Choose Note: or select New Note to create a new one.
  5. Optional: Add additional text.
  6. Tap or click Save.

Can I link an image to a web page?

No.

You can only link text directly to content on the web. To link an image to a web page, you can add a caption that contains the link or include the link as such beneath the image, for example.

Can I just highlight text and paste a URL to link?

No.

If you’re used to an editor automatically turning web site URLs into links if you paste them with text highlighted, do adapt your workflow a bit for Apple Notes on a Mac:

  1. Highlight the text you want to link.
  2. Press Command K.
  3. Press Command V.
  4. Now press Enter.

How can I add “Notes” to the sharing menu?

To make sure Apple Nots appears as an option for sharing a page in your browser:

Mac

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to the General category.
  3. Select Login Items & Extensions.
  4. Click i next to Sharing.
  5. Turn on Notes.
  6. Click Done.

  1. Open the sharing menu in a browser
  2. Select More to the right of the current list of apps available for sharing.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Turn on Notes
    To the front: Tap + if Notes appears under Suggestions to move it to Favorites, where you can change the order to boot and move sharing to Apple Notes to the front.

How can I remove a link from text in Apple Notes?

To delete a link from text and keep the text sans link in Apple Notes for Mac, iPhone and iPad:

  1. Bring up the context menu for the link.
    Here’s how: Click on the link with the right mouse button on a Mac; tap and hold the link on iPhone and iPad.
  2. Select Remove Link from the menu.
