How to Set up Gmail Access in Thunderbird
All Automatic Setup
Time needed: 3 minutes
To set up access to a Gmail account in Thunderbird using IMAP (which gives you access to messages and folders, all synchronizing automatically with Gmail on the web):
- Enable IMAP access for the Gmail account.
- Click the hamburger menu button (
) in Thunderbird.
- Select New Account | Existing Email from the menu that has appeared.
- Enter the name you want to appear in the From: line of the emails you send using the Gmail account under Your full name.
- Type the Gmail email address under Email address.
- You can leave the Password field blank.
App password: Using a Gmail app password created for Thunderbird will also work.

POP: You can also choose POP3, of course, and let Thunderbird download messages from Gmail to the local machine as copies.
Manual: If automatic settings detection does not work for Gmail, select Configure manually to input the SMTP and IMAP settings by hand. - Click Done.
- Use the browser window that has appeared to log in to the Gmail account.
