To insert the current date and time as a timestamp anywhere on your Mac using Shortcuts:
- Set up a Shortcuts quick action for inserting (or copying) the current date and time; see below.
- Position the text cursor where you want to insert the timestamp.
- Select Services | Get Current Timestamp from the app’s main menu.
The name: Substitute Get Current Timestamp with your quick action’s name, of course, if you chose a different one.
Keyboard shortcut: if you set up a keyboard shortcut for the quick action, you can also press that key combination to insert the current timestamp.

Create a “Get Current Timestamp” Quick Action in Shortcuts
To set up a quick action in macOS Shortcuts for inserting the current date and time as a timestamp:
- Open Shortcuts.
Here’s how: You can use Spotlight Apps to find and launch Shortcuts fast. - Go to the Quick Actions category in the Library.
- Click +.
Keyboard shortcut: You can also press Command N to add a new shortcut. - Optional: Select Dates and 18 more (or your default choice) following Receive at the top of the quick action.
- Select Continue for If there’s no input:.
- Drag and drop Date into the action.
- Select Current Date for the date object.
- Drag and drop Format date below Current Date so it receives the current date and time as its input.
- Expand the Format field.

Custom: Choose Custom to concoct your own format for the timestamp.

Optional: Select Copy to Clipboard for If there’s nowhere to output to copy the timestamp for later pasting if you are not in a text field when you run the action. - Check Services Menu is enabled for the quick action in the details sidebar.
- Optional: Click Add Keyboard Shortcut to make inserting a timestamp even easier.
- Click in the title to change the name for the quick action.
