To change the formatting for text in an email you write with Yahoo Mail in a desktop browser:

  1. Highlight the characters or words you want to format.

    What gets formatted: With no text selected, any changes you make will apply to the next text you write.

  2. Apply formatting using the bottom toolbar.

    Bold: make text bold (Command B or Ctrl B)
    Italic: italicize (Command I or Ctrl I)
    Text color: change the color of the text and highlight select text with a background color
    Font: change the typeface and the font size
    Left align, Center align, and Right align: change the text alignment
    Bulleted list and Numbered list: insert itemized lists
    Increase indent and Decrease indent: tab in and out or move down or up the hierarchy level in a list, respectively.
    Strikethrough: strike out text
    Command U or Ctrl U: underline (this is only a keyboard shortcut without a button in the formatting toolbar)
    No formatting toolbar: If you see no formatting buttons in the message composition toolbar, click Switch to rich text mode in it.

How to Change the Font Using the Yahoo Mail App for iOS

To apply formatting to text using the Yahoo Mail app for iOS:

  1. Double tap a word to highlight it in your email.
  2. Use the handles to change the selection.
  3. Tap BIU in the context menu.
  4. Apply formatting as desired:
    Bold: make text bold
    Italic. italicize text
    Underline: underline the highlighted text.

Note that you cannot change the font and cannot increase the font size in Yahoo Mail for iOS—and no formatting at all in Yahoo Mail for Android.

Yahoo Mail will send an email that contains formatting in both rich-text and plain-text versions.

You can pick a default typeface and font size for Yahoo Mail on the desktop. This does not include bolding, italics or other formatting options.

Can I apply text formatting using basic HTML Yahoo email?

No.

Yahoo Mail Basic offers a stripped-down interface using basic HTML for fast access to essential Yahoo Mail features. All emails and replies you send using Yahoo Mail Basic use plain text only, and you cannot apply text formatting.
