How to Add a Sender to Your Outlook.com Address Book (People)

To add a sender to your Outlook.com address book fast:

  1. Open a message from the sender you want to add to the address book in Outlook.com.
  2. Now click the sender’s name or email address to open the contact pane.
  3. Click the More actions button (•••) in the contact pane.
  4. Select Add to contacts from the menu that has appeared.
    • Note: If Outlook.com already contains an entry with the sender’s email address, you will see Edit contact in the menu instead; you can use that to open the contact and edit its details.
  5. Add contact details for the new Outlook.com address book entry as desired.
  6. Click Save.

How to Add a Sender to Your Address Book in Outlook.com Beta

To quickly add an email’s sender to your contacts in Outlook.com (Fall 2017 beta):

  1. Open the message whose sender you want to add to your contacts.
  2. Move the mouse cursor over the sender’s name or email address in the message’s header area.
  3. Click the three-dots menu icon (•••) at the bottom of the sender sheet that has appeared.
  4. Select Add to contacts from the menu that has shown.
    • Note: If the sender’s email address is already in your Outlook.com address book, you will see Edit contact instead; you can use this to open the sender’s entry and change contact details.

      Unfortunately, the correct address book entry may not open automatically. To go to the desired contact:

      1. Click Search People.
      2. Type or paste the email address in the search field.
      3. Hit Enter.
        • Tip: Click the right address book entry in search auto-complete suggestions to jump right to the correct contact.
      4. With the desired contact open under Search results, click Edit to change details.

Outlook.com will silently create an address book entry. You can use the steps above (using Edit contact) to open the entry in Outlook.com People.

How to Add a Sender to Your Address Book in Outlook.com Mobile

To add a sender’s name and email address to your Outlook.com address book using the mobile interface to Outlook.com:

  1. Open a message from the sender.
  2. Tap the sender’s name or email address.
  3. Now tap Add.
  4. Add any details as needed under Add contact.
    • Note: your cannot change the email address added, but you can edit any name pre-filled under Name.
  5. Tap Done.
