How to Add a Gmail Account in Pegasus Mail Using IMAP

Time needed: 10 minutes

To set up Gmail in Pegasus Mail as an IMAP email account so you can seamlessly access all your Gmail labels as folders and have them synchronize automatically with the web and other email programs:

  1. Enable IMAP access in Gmail.

  2. Select Tools | IMAP profiles… from the menu in Pegasus Mail.

  3. In the Manage IMAP Profiles window, click New….

  4. Make sure you are on the Connection tab in the IMAP Mailbox settings window.

  5. Type Gmail (for example) under Enter a name for this definition.

  6. Enter imap.gmail.com under IMAP server address:.

  7. Type your full Gmail email address under Login name:.

  8. Now enter a Gmail application password you have created for Pegasus Mail under Password:.

    Briefly save the password: Do note the password somewhere temporarily; you will need it to set up sending through Gmail in Pegasus Mail as well.

  9. Go to the Settings tab.

  10. Make sure This server supports folders within folders is checked.

  11. Now go to the Performance tab.

  12. Make sure Use fast folder listing commands is checked.

  13. Go to the Security tab.

  14. Make sure Via direct SSL connect is selected under Use SSL/TSL security for this connection.

  15. Click Change under Secure connections might need different ports.

  16. Now click OK.

  17. Double-click the newly created IMAP profile in the Manage IMAP Profiles window to connect to it.

Now, set up sending; see below.

Note that Pegasus Mail may report errors when you delete or move messages. In general, you can ignore these errors, as they do not reflect anything having gone wrong.

How to Add a Gmail Account in Pegasus Mail Using POP

To add Gmail to Pegasus Mail as a POP email account (so you can download newly arriving messages and manage them fully in Pegasus Mail without synchronizing folders or actions):

  1. Make sure Gmail POP access is enabled for your account.
  2. Select Tools | Internet options… from the menu in Pegasus Mail.
  3. Go to the Receiving (POP3) tab.
  4. Click Add… under Check these POP3 hosts for mail.
  5. Now click New… in the POP3 mail download definitions window.
  6. Make sure you are on the General tab of the Settings for retrieving mail (POP3) window.
  7. Enter Gmail (or any other name that lets you recognize your Gmail email account) under Enter a name for this definition.
  8. Type pop.gmail.com under Server host name:.
  9. Enter your Gmail email address under User name: right below.
  10. Now enter the Gmail app password you created for Pegasus Mail under Password:.
  11. Go to the Security tab.
  12. Make sure Via direct SSL connect is selected under Use SSL/TLS security on this connection.
  13. Click Change.
  14. Now click OK.
  15. Highlight the newly added account under Available POP3 definitions.
  16. Click Select.
  17. Click OK.

How to Set Up Gmail in Pegasus Mail for Sending Using SMTP

To configure Pegasus Mail so you can send messages using your Gmail address:

  1. Select Tools | Internet options… from the menu in Pegasus Mail.
  2. Make sure you are on the Internet Mail Options window’s General tab.
  3. Type your Gmail email address under My Internet e-mail address is:.
  4. Go to the Sending (SMTP) tab.
  5. Click Add… under Send mail using these SMTP hosts.
  6. Now click New… in the SMTP definitions for sending mail.
  7. Type Gmail (or whatever helps you find the Gmail SMTP settings) under Enter a name for this definition.
  8. Enter smtp.gmail.com under Server host name:.
  9. Go to the Security tab.
  10. Make sure Via direct SSL connect is selected under Use SSL/TLS security on this connection.
  11. Click Change.
  12. Make sure Login to the SMTP server using the following details: is checked under SMTP Authentication.
  13. Type your full Gmail email address under Username: (below Login to the SMTP server using the following details:).
  14. Enter the Gmail application password you created for Pegasus Mail under Password:.
  15. Click OK.
  16. Highlight the newly added Gmail SMTP definition in the Available SMTP definitions list.
  17. Click Select.
  18. Make sure Send mail at once without placing in queue is checked.
  19. Now make sure Use in preference to LAN mailer for Internet mail is checked as well.
  20. Click OK.
