How to Type the Squared Symbol ( ▯² ) on a Windows Keyboard
Insert ² with the Windows Emoji Panel (Convenient)
Time needed: 2 minutes
To add the squared symbol ( ² ) anywhere in Windows using the emoji panel:
- Position the text cursor where you want to enter the squared sign.
Here’s where: Put the squared symbol immediately after a measurement unit, for instance (such as mi²)
- Press Windows . (period) to bring up the emoji panel.
- Go to %⟳△+ (Symbols).
Windows 10: Choose the Ω tab.
- Now choose (or scroll to) Math symbols.
- Click ² to insert the symbol for squared.
With the keyboard: You can use the arrow keys to highlight the symbol and press Enter to insert it.

Using the Windows Touch Keyboard (Swift Access)
To quickly insert superscripted numbers like the squared symbol using the Windows touch keyboard:
- Click Touch keyboard in the taskbar to bring up the Windows touch keyboard.
- Select &123.
No “&123”: Select the settings gear icon in the keyboard and select Keyboard layout | Default (or Small or Split); the Traditional layout does not offer easy access to superscript numbers. - Tap and hold 2.
- Highlight ² and let go to insert the squared symbol.
Other numbers: The same same works with all the other numbers (including ⁰ for the superscript zero).

To insert the squared symbol ( ² ) using the United States-International keyboard layout for Windows:
- Add the US-International keyboard layout to Windows.
- Press and hold Windows.
- Now press Space until the ENG INTL keyboard layout is highlighted.
- Let go of the Windows key.
- Press AltGr 2 to insert ².
Cubed: Press AltGr 3 for cubed ( ³ ).
