Time needed: 2 minutes

To insert the diamond character (lozenge ◊) anywhere on a Mac using the macOS emoji panel or character viewer:

  1. Position the text cursor where you want to input the lozenge.

  2. Open emoji panel or character viewer.

    Here‘s how: Select Edit | Emoji & Symbols from the menu.
    Mac keyboard shortcut: You can also press 🌐︎ or Fn E to access character viewer.

  3. Type lozenge in the search field.

    Not diamond”: Searching for diamond will not bring up the lozenge character (though it will take you to lozenge-like characters; do use it to insert the card suit character, for example)

  4. Double-click the lozenge character ◊ to insert it.

    LOZENGE”: The character is called LOZENGE in the tooltip as you rest the mouse cursor over it.

Using Text Replacement for Diamond and Lozenge

To input a lozenge using text replacement on a Mac:

  1. Set up a text replacement shortcut for the lozenge; see below.
  2. Type the designated shortcut where you want to input the lozenge.
  3. Follow up with Space, Enter, punctuation or any other character to have your shortcut replaced with the lozenge char.
    No diamond: To prevent text replacement, press (right arrow) so the character suggestion disappears, for example.

To set up a shortcut that will let you enter a diamond or lozenge character directly from the keyboard on a Mac:

  1. Open System Settings on the Mac.
  2. Go to the Keyboard category.
  3. Click Text Replacements….
  4. Now click +.
  5. Type the character combination you want to use for the lozenge under Replace.
    Example: You can use something like <>, for example, if you do not use the character sequence otherwise.
  6. Insert the lozenge ◊ under With.
    Here’s how: Use the emoji panel, for instance, or paste the character copied from this page.
  7. Click Add.
  8. Now click Done.

Using a Keyboard Shortcut (Certain Keyboard Layouts)

To find the keyboard shortcut that will let you enter the lozenge char on your Mac’s keyboard layout:

  1. Open keyboard viewer.
    Settings: You can also find keyboard shortcuts when choosing input sources in System Settings.
  2. Press Option.
  3. Look for on the on-screen keyboard to identify the key combination that will insert it.
  4. Try Option Shift and other combinations if Option alone does not reveal the lozenge.
    Example: With German keyboard layouts, you can use Option Shift V to insert .
    No English shortcut: US-and UK-English layouts do not include a shortcut for the lozenge.
