First, Down in Flames
Things burning usually go up in the air, going up in flame and smokes. Sometimes, though, the opposite happens: air itself is pulled down to earth in parts, turning something fleeting into something solid.
Notably, the iron filings in steel wool react with oxygen from the surrounding air as they burn. Oxidized iron is nothing but rust, of course — and in no way airy. Picking up oxygen atoms from the air, steel wool gets heavier as burns, rusting quickly.
Now, does your Apple Mail inbox feel heavy just as you browse through your list of emails, always reacting by showing previews?

Make the Mail Message Preview Visible Again
To return the message preview area to previewing emails in Mail for Mac:
- Position the text cursor just inside the window border to which you dragged for hiding message preview.
Here’s what you’ll see: The cursor will display the resizing cursor with a (separating) line through its center.
Side or bottom: You can only re-enable the preview area from the border to which you collapsed it — the bottom for bottom preview and the side for side preview. - Click and drag the (initially invisible) separator into the Mail window until the preview area appears.
No revelation: If dragging the handle into the window does not show the preview area, the Mail window is likely too small to show both the message list and preview; do enlarge the window, then drag again.
Using the menu: You can also select View | Show Side Preview or view | Show Bottom Preview from the menu, depending on which preview was active before you hid it.
